Bib or waist tights, and the toilet-stop problem
Choosing between bib and waist tights is the biggest decision here, and it comes down to toilet stops. Bibs are warmer and don’t slip down, but a normal bib means taking off your jacket and jersey on a cold roadside. Testers say the same:
Bib tights do make comfort breaks more difficult though. Some have short zips, although I've not found that this helps much. It's trickier for women riders, which is why many prefer waist tights.
| Style | Priced | From | Median | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Waist tights | 27 | £22 | £95 | Easy toilet stops; can slip and gap at the back |
| Bib tights, any | 30 | £49.99 | £137 | Warmer and stay put; awkward to get out of |
| Bib tights named drop-seat, DT or halter | 1 | £145 | £145 | Bib warmth with a quick way out |
Drop-seat, DT and halter designs
Drop-seat (DT) and halter-neck bibs fix that: the back comes down without anything coming off your top half. Only 1 of the 30 bib tights here say so in the product name, so check the photos if a style matters to you.
The back of the tights are easily pulled down to pee, without having to remove any other layers – a real boon for winter riding.
Once you've had bib tights or shorts with this feature, it's really hard to go back.
Some well-reviewed tights don’t have this feature, and reviewers point it out:
The pad provides ample comfort for many hours in the saddle, but it's a shame they didn't include a quick-access comfort-break feature.
Waist tights
Waist tights are the simple option: cheaper, and easy to pull down. The catch is a gap at the back when you lean forward, and a waistband that can dig in on long rides. A high-waisted pair with a front zip helps with the first problem but brings its own:
if you're not flat-stomached, the fit might not work well for you.
Our take: what’s worth paying for
As for temperature, most winter tights are designed for single figures:
They perform best below 10º for optimal temperature-regulating comfort.
The Sorpassos are designed to be water-resistant as well as suitable for riding conditions from -2° to 10°C.
Cycling Weekly’s bib tights guide puts it more simply: It is possible to get waist tights, but we'd always recommend bibs.
We’d add one condition: bibs, as long as there’s a way out of them. The median drop-seat bib here costs £145, against £137 for bibs overall.

How we got these numbers
We read each shop’s own product listings, size by size, and this page was rebuilt from that read on 17 September 2026. A price counts only if it is in pounds and the shop has not marked that size sold out. Where a shop publishes no stock at all, we show its price but leave it out of every in-stock percentage rather than guess. We never convert a euro or dollar price: import VAT and duty make those numbers wrong in your favour on paper and against you at the door.
No brand or shop pays for a place on this page: the order is price, and nothing else. Prices move daily; the product page always shows the time of the last read. More in how Spoke Signal works.
